Details on Moving Email Storage to a USB or External Drive

To keep things simple I created a folder on the new flash drive (in my case e:) called email. I then went into Outlook express selected options, then maintenance, then store folder, clicked change and selected e:\email from the choices that were presented. Now came the part where it is easy to become confused. You can either choose "yes" and switch to the new location without moving any of your files and every thing new will be on the USB drive but the old files will still be on the old location or "no" and it will move all you old files to the new location on the USB drive and remove them from the hard drive. (no extra copying involved). You then have to close Outlook Express, reopen it, and you will be operating on your USB drive with nothing ever touching the hard drive. So far, so good. When you close down your computer take out the USB drive and take it with you. Your files are safe.

Now the problem: If you forget to put the USB drive in place and start Outlook Express you get the welcome message like you got the first time you opened Outlook Express. So far no problem, except you can not now get at your email files without again going through the changeover process from above. The catch comes at the yes/no question. Now, if you click "no" like you did before to transfer your files from C: to the new drive, it will do the same thing and thus wipe out all your real files and put on the welcome file. This time you have to choose yes. The safer and easier thing to do is to close down your computer put in the USB drive and reboot. That way there is no chance of making a mistake and wiping out your email file.
